Daily News float - Columbus Day 2013 |
Columbus Day allows the world to see our culture's contributions. And, Columbus Day 2013 was chock full of cultural highs. For starters - many floats were dedicated to specific Italian icons. Chief among them were Machiavelli (author of "The Prince") and composer Giuseppe Verdi (celebrating the 200th anniversary of his birth.)
This year also bore witness to multiple floats representing the numerous Italian schools in the New York metro area. Even to a person heavily involved in the Italian community, it was definitely eye opening to see how many schools actually represent our culture.
Lastly, the day saw NY Governor Andrew Cuomo, NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the mayoral candidates in attendance - showing their support (and pride) for the Italian culture.
Before you enjoy our photos below - please remember one key thing: Christopher Columbus is the unifying force for the Italian community. He was selected by Italians, for Italians. His name and image appear in Little Italies across the United States and Canada. His contributions to the founding and settling of the Americas are incontrovertible. Do not let revisionists and certain groups with political agendas attack, dismantle or destroy the federal holiday that recognizes our cultural contributions to the Americas. This is our day - and we must protect it.
