While the world prepared for the Olympics - parts of Italy were under siege by coastline smashing waves and torrential downpours. The main area affected was the Ionian (southern most) coast of Calabria.

As many know, coastal areas in Italy are built around a "lungomare." A lungomare is, essentially a stonework boardwalk that runs along the coast line (see first photo above.) It gives inhabitants and visitors instant access to the beach, places to eat and a scenic view.

Unfortunately, a large swath of lungomare in Calabria (stretching from Rocella to Bovalino) has been completely destroyed by the storm. According to local reports, in three days the area experienced waves in excess of 24 feet and a rainfall of more than 3 inches.
