Italian American groups have begun to criticize Spike Lee for his stereotypical representation of Italians in his films. The Italian groups take issue with three particular films, "Do the right thing," "Jungle Fever," and "Miracle at St. Anna." As a result, they wanted him banned from a Martin Luther King Jr. event in Illinois.
At issue is Lee's portrayal of Italians as ignorant, intolerant and violent towards African Americans.
Take a look at Jungle Fever and what it thinks of Italians (namely all of Annabella Sciorra's friends, and family members)
While I wouldn't say the films rise to the level of nonsense that is the Jersey Shore, I can absolutely see the angle the Italian organizations are taking. These organizations are being told by their constituents that something has to be done or said about the portrayal of Italians- and the organizations are responding.
Lee attempted to come back at Italians by reading quotes from The Godfather, Goodfellas and Casino among others, which all included the "n-word." Because these films used that word, Lee believes that Italians are creating a double standard by complaining about his movies.
I happen to disagree. Italians are upset at his movies and the way he continually portrays Italians. Lee quoted several movies made be several different people- not just one Italian director who goes out of his way to call out the black community. Truthfully, I'm glad Lee is catching flak for this- how many stereotypical, or flat our inaccurate portrayals of Italians should he be allowed to create without any explanation as to why?
Interesting to note though- Spike Lee said (referring to the organizations) "Those guys need to protest ‘Jersey Shore'...that’s what they need to do.
I couldn't agree more
