Since we last wrote our story on the Italic Institute's nonsense campaign against Rudy Giuliani, several things have become very clear. 1) The Italic Institute is a bully organization fueled by politics more than Italian causes, 2) The Italic Institute didn't even view any parts of Mob Week to see Giuliani's performance, 3) Every news outlet that picked up the Italic Institute's story failed to do some fact checking.
Rudy Giuliani did not "shame" Italian Americans- regardless of what the Italic Institute might think:
The Italic Institute was very upset that Rudy Giuliani hosted Mob Week on AMC. The organization thought this to be very anti-Italian and unpresidential. It even went so far as to say Rudy Giuliani "shamed" Italians.
Here are the facts:
Of the 9 movies that were played during Mob week, 6 were Italian mob movies ( 3 of which were the Godfather trilogy, followed by Goodfellas, Donnie Brasco and the Untouchables.)
The others? All non-Italian mob movies: Machine Gun Kelly, Pulp Fiction, Scarface, and Carlito's Way. In considering that the Godfathers are essentially a 3 part story arc, you shouldn't count them individually. This means 4 mob movies were shown, along with 4 non-Italian mob movies. This certainly wasn't "anti-Italian" as the Italic Institute put it.
More importantly, as part of the promos for Mob week, Rudy Giuliani discussed his hatred of the Mafia stereotype of Italians. He hated it as a kid and realized the only way to save the reputation of honest, hard working Italians was to fight the mob. He also discussed how it was a "dream come true" to be able to prosecute organized crime.
Of course, the Italic Institute didn't mention these promos. Clearly, the head of the institute heard "Giuliani" and "mob" and went completely nuts. He used it as a springboard to launch his anti-republican rant for the 2012 election, which Giuliani may or may not run for. He went so far as to tell us to not even vote for Republican Giuliani- wait for Cuomo in 2016.
As for every news outlet that picked up on the Italic Institute's story- they didn't get their facts straight. They just simply re-posted the story, or in the case of the NY Daily News: They allowed the head of the institute to write a full editorial on how Giuliani "shamed" Italians.
Apparently, for the Italic Institute, if you are an Italian, who attacks the Italian mob, prosecutes them to the fullest extent of the law and hates the reputation they gave to the Italian community, you have shamed the Italian community and won't have the organization's support if you run for president.
Maybe the institute should re-read what it means to be an "Italian advancement" organization. In any event, it should check its facts before it spouts off a vitriolic campaign against America's Mayor.
thank you for an enhanced percerption of this issue. This makes sense to me. Grazia Francioli Bittner
