Teresa Giudice - Italian Stereotypes and Hypocrisy

In the past, we've written about how Teresa Giudice (from Real Housewives of New Jersey) has acted out Italian stereotypes on national television. If you've missed it, Mrs. Giudice has thrown dinner tables at people:

#1

In her own words:

" I just got mad, I guess its an Italian thing and we just do that. My father did it, my brother did it, I did it."

So, according to Teresa- Italians don't know how to use their words to resolve issues. They have to resort to flipping over tables and throwing things to get their points across. Like cavemen.

#2

She launched a new clothing line: TG Fabulicious Guidette. How did the line of clothing become popular? She made her children wear it during their appearances on the show. What a great way for her kids to get to know their heritage.

What makes all of this worse is that Teresa Giudice has openly admitted that her behavior on Real Housewives of New Jersey is not her real behavior:

So, what she is saying is that she is playing up Italian stereotypes- for the purposes of furthering a reality television show. Wow- way to sell out your own kind, Teresa.

By Teresa admitting that  her actions on RHNJ are fake (and not how she really acts) - isn't she a bit of a hypocrite by justifying her table flipping in the first video above by saying:

"I just got mad, I guess its an Italian thing and we just do that. My father did it, my brother did it, I did it."

If her deplorable actions were not real- then why explain them away as "being Italian?" Why would she throw her entire community and culture under the bus- if she knew full well that her actions were premeditated and staged?

This is not to say that Mrs. Giudice's behavior is the only portrayal of Italian stereotypes on the show. Many of the other cast members are Italian Americans- and do portray Italians in a negative light. But, Teresa Giudice's behavior is the most over the top- and the worst portrayal of our rich culture and history.

So, as the new season of RHNJ kicks off, we ask all Italian Americans familiar with the show to ask: “Why is Teresa Giudice famous?” A large part of the answer is because she sold out her heritage for a bit of fame and fortune.
